Hope Walk 2012 – Youth Helping Youth

Empowering orphans, walking for orphans, in Africa

Hope Walk Foot LogoWHAT is the Hope Walk?
The Hope Walk is a 5k fundraising walk by empowered African orphans to help other orphans in Africa suffering from hunger, disease, isolation and homelessness. Orphans in Kenya, who have broken free from a life of poverty through ZOE Ministry’s Orphan Empowerment Program, walk to raise funds and awareness for the many more orphans in Africa who remain vulnerable.

WHEN is the Hope Walk?
The 2012 Hope Walk will be held on Saturday morning, February 11.

HOW can I participate?
Across America, we encourage youth groups to participate in a fundraiser of their choice to sponsor the African walkers. Then, on the morning of February 11, a live video chat between Kenya and the US via Oovoo will be held, allowing participating youth to meet and have a time of sharing and worship with the orphans that they sponsored. You can also download an informational flyer to help us spread the word. To participate, please register below.

SCHEDULE for video chat (Eastern Standard Time)
8:00 – 8:50 – Live video footage from Kenya of the end of the walk followed by video chat between the Kenyan and American youth.
8:50 – 9:00 – Orphans sharing songs from Kenya
9:00 – 9:25 – Shared communion with the Kenyan orphans
9:25 – 9:30 – Song and conclusion to worship
9:30 – 10:00 – Concluding time of video visits between Kenyan and American youth

IDEAS for fundraising

  • Get 12 people to sponsor a walking orphan at $30 (which is the amount needed to sponsor a child-led family of three for one year in the ZOE program). ZOE Ministry will provide a sponsorship sheet with a photo and story of one of the orphans who will be walking.
  • Sell Hope Walk Footprints: Download and print out Hope Walk 2012 footprints, and “sell” them for a donation of $10 or more. The footprints, with donors’ names written on them, could be placed in a prominent place in the church representing orphans walking on behalf of other orphans.
  • Pillow Factory: This is a creative youth fundraiser where people bring in old T-shirts to be made into pillows, and sold. Great idea for any sewing enthusiast!
  • Yard Clean Up: People in the church can “hire” the youth group to clean up their (or a friend’s) yard, gutters, etc. in return for a donation. People can also donate to have the youth provide yard work for a shut-in person in their congregation.
  • Christmas Animals: The youth group can run an alternative giving market and “sell” ZOE Christmas Animals. ZOE can provide groups with ornament-style gift cards representing five different animals that can be sold at varying price levels from $10-$400. For cards to host a market, please contact info@zoeministry.org.
  • Spare Change Sunday: Encourage church members to bring their spare change and collect it to support Hope Walk orphans.
  • Your Favorite Fundraiser: You can feel free to use whatever fundraiser works best for your group, there are many great ideas out there!
